Question by mrscrystikal: Cleaning Supply Tips and Favorite Supplies?
My Mom has MS. I am going to start cleaning her house on Mondays for her. I would like tips on products and how to be fast and effective at the same time.
She has Granite Counters, Wood Floors, Porcelin Sinks (The one in the kitchen is black, and the bathrooms are white)
I need tips on cleaning the microwave, showers, tubs, bathrooms, kitchen, wood floors, windows, dusting, laundry, making beds, and anything else you can think of.
I want to do it right, but I also have health issues and a house of my own, so I need help!

I don’t know that much about laundry or making beds and such but as for cleaning stuff…
I have always had great results with Simple Green. It has a pleasant smell and is extremely powerful if you use it undiluted. I usually mix half a cup to a gallon of water and it cleans just about everything. Diluting it also makes it very cheap compared to other cleaning products. One major plus is that you don’t have to use rubber gloves – unless you already have serious skin problems.
Check out their website. They are also very polite and prompt in answering questions you might have.

I’m asking too about cleaners, but this is what I currently use (we don’t have wood floors).
You need to find out if the wood floors are finished or natural. Sometimes you need a special cleaner or paste. Follow mfg. recommended cleaning instructions.
Bathroom: Scrubbing Bubbles for sinks/tub/surround/shower Use a “No Scratch” Scotch Brite pad (Target). After it’s really clean, apply Gel Gloss to help keep soap scum off walls.
Toilets: most any toilet bowl cleaner. will do.
Always wear gloves when doing bathrooms (I use disposable gloves). Also always use gloves when cleaning a litter box.
Iron stains in tanks: Iron Out (Menards) they come in tablet forms for the tanks and work wonders at elimination of rust – it will take a couple of weeks to see results as it soaks off iron.
Window washing fluid for cars by the gallon: cheaper & more effective than regular window spray! I found this out one day when I ran out of the regular stuff and had to substitute.
Fantastic Antibacterial spray for kitchen. Doesn’t streak and cleans nicely with a tolerable scent (lemon).
Microwave, remove glass turntable and wash gently in dishsoap. Put one cup of warm water in microwave and microwave for 2 or 3 minutes. After that, take and wash inside with a tiny bit of dish soap and baking soda to clean & deodorize. Dry with paper towel.
Dusters: Swiffer Dusters – fabulous and easy to get around surfaces esp. blinds. Love them.
Floors: my Swiffer Wet Jet with solution used sparingly
Keep a box of baking soda in the freezer and one in the fridge, it really helps deodorize. Clean your bins each month with dishsoap & baking soda.
Don’t mix bleach with other cleaners. In fact avoid bleach it can damage surfaces, and burn skin.
Consider Mrs. Meyers natural cleaning products with essential oils, they smell terrific but can be a bit pricey for the average household. I use her dryer sheets, bc if I use regular dryer sheets I get migraines and feel ill. With your mom’s situation this make make a difference. I also like to use the dryer balls in the dryer to help fluff clothing and prevent static. I always have 2 of them in the dryer and have had them for years. Wal-mart carries them.
If you can afford it, spoil yourself and her with Mrs. Meyers.
If you have special surfaces like granite, go to Menard’s or Home Depot or wherever and find a nice selection of special cleaners which are appropriate. Always follow mfg. recommendations for that.
