Specifically what steps would you take and what tools would you use to verify, clean/remove the virus?

Avast! To remove the virus, and then Nod32 to check if it’s gone.

    Download, install and run a full scan with Malwarebytes

    Run a full scan with Micro Trend House Call

    After the scans, restart the PC and download SuperAntiSpyware and run a full scan

    Then update your anti-virus, remember to only have one anti-virus installed on your PC

    Really all you have to do is install a great anti-virus software program. I personally like Eset Smart Security (the entire internet suite) or just the antivirus software Nod32….they are the same company.

    You do not have any antivirus on machine now?
    To be sure (since you can not run antivirus from floppies any more), I remove HDD, put it in external usb hdd enclosure, connect to virus-free PC & do complete scan.
    you can use AVG free.
    If the drive is too infected, you might consider backing up user files & reinstalling Windows.
